2018 One-Ton Truck Challenge Preview: Meet the 2018 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 High Country

By Brian Normile

As we gear up to reveal the winner of our upcoming 2018 One-Ton Heavy-Duty Truck Challenge, we thought we'd give you a chance to meet the competitors and take a look at what they offered. First up: the 2018 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 High Country.

The competitors for this test were 4x4 crew-cab single-rear-wheel models powered by diesel engines, targeting $75,000. Thus, Chevrolet sent us the Silverado 3500 High Country, which starts at $59,610 including a $1,295 destination fee.

Options on this truck are scarce. Adding the turbo-diesel 6.6-liter Duramax V-8 also adds the Allison six-speed automatic, a 3.73:1 axle ratio, an engine block heater and a capped fuel opening. Total cost? It's $9,255 — but ours also offered a $750 discount, knocking the added price down to $8,505.

For $370 the Silverado was also prepped for gooseneck and fifth-wheel towing as required for our testing. It also had a $1,620 rear entertainment system which was not required for testing but, hey, why not?

Total price for the top-of-the-line Silverado 3500 was $70,965 before the discount; with the discount, $70,215.

We'll introduce the other competitors, the 2018 Ram 3500 and 2018 Ford F-350, before we reveal how they performed in our testing and who came out on top, so stay tuned.
