2021 GMC Yukon Will Premier New Upscale Styling Feature
Borrowing a play from Mercedes' style book.
General Motors appears to be borrowing a play from Germany's Mercedes-Benz, offering its first-ever back-lit grille emblem on the all-new, 2021 GMC Yukon. The accessory is listed in the official GMC Yukon order guide. The light-up emblem will be available exclusively as a dealer-installed accessory, offered with each of the 2021 GMC Yukon's trim levels: SLE, SLT, AT4, and Denali.
Back-lit emblems have become a surprise hit over at Mercedes, which makes sense given the brand's history as a symbol of status. Here in the US, it could be argued that GMC enjoys a certain elevated status of its own - albeit one that carries a significantly lower price premium. Why not show off?
We don't have any photos yet of the back-lit GMC grille emblem, and it's uncertain whether it will be offered with black lettering, like some of the brand's more recent emblems, or with the more traditional red block letters. Regardless, we suspect the take-rate will be plenty high - especially through the first couple of years of production. The order guide does not list the price just yet.
That's also in-line with the pricing for Mercedes's back-lit emblem, which first hit the market back in 2013.
GMC follows Chevrolet in offering a back-lit emblem as an accessory. The "Glowtie," as it's nicknamed, is available on vehicles such as the Silverado pickup truck, and the mighty Camaro muscle car.
Depending on how hot a seller the Yukon's back-lit GMC emblem turns out to be, we could see GM introducing something similar for a range of different vehicle models in the coming years.
