Burned-Out Jeep Destroyed by Fireworks, Authorities Say

Montgomery County Fire & Rescue
A group of people were setting off fireworks when a mortar detonated inside the Jeep, authorities say. No one was hurt.

Authorities say a burned-out Jeep discovered by police was destroyed by fireworks detonating inside the vehicle.

Maryland Natural Resources Police found the burned Jeep and "various fireworks strewn about" on Hunting Quarter Road in Poolesville, Maryland, on Thursday morning, the day after the Fourth of July.

Montgomery County Fire & Rescue investigators spoke with a person of interest and determined that on the night of the Fourth, a group of people were setting off fireworks when a mortar detonated inside the Jeep.

Authorities say more than two dozen people were present at at time, and several tried to extinguish the fire, but no one called the fire department.
