General Motors reignited the mid-size pickup segment four years ago when it re-introduced the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon. Since then, it added the off-road-oriented 2018 Colorado ZR2, and the response has been just peachy. We now know Toyota plans to better challenge the Colorado ZR2 with a tweaked Tacoma TRD Pro.

The 2019 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro will debut at the 2018 Chicago Auto Show tomorrow, and at a minimum, we know it will gain a snorkel. Otherwise, we don’t spot any other major changes to the pickup, but the teaser image provided hides other details in a sea of dust.

Snorkels can help off-road vehicles by preventing water consumption and even reduce the amount of debris pulled into the intake by placing it higher up.

Chevrolet showed the Colorado ZR2 AEV concept at last year’s SEMA show, which included a snorkel. The concept also added a host of other AEV goodies such as front and rear off-road bumpers, underbody skid protection and high-clearance fender flares.

We expect to see a refreshed Chevy Colorado debut sometime this year, and the ZR2 could gain a handful of improvements along the way. In the meantime, the Chevy Trucks team will likely keep an eye on what comes out of Toyota’s truck division.
