April 1991: '91 Jeep Wrangler vs. '41 Willys MB
Join us as we explore 50 years of Jeep evolution
July 24, 2018
As the headline to today's classic article selection -- "Is Today's Jeep Still a Jeep?" -- makes crystal clear, we've had a long and uneasy relationship with the ongoing evolution of the descendants of the WWII-era Willys MB. Every time a new model comes around, we wonder if it's lost its way ... until we take if for a test drive and conclude that, no, the new Wrangler's still got its mojo.
But what if we ourselves are losing perspective, going soft around the edges? The only way we can be sure we aren't is to stack a new Jeep (well, new circa 1991) against the original. So we lined up a 1991 Wrangler YJ and did a nice little comparison with a 1941 Willys MB. This is much more than a debate around round and rectangular headlights -- this is about the soul of one of America's favorite vehicles.
