Automotive Minute: Toyota ups off-road prowess of 4Runner, Tundra and Tacoma TRD Pro

Designed by the engineers at Toyota Racing Development, the sporty and off-road capable TRD Pro Series of Toyota trucks is getting upgrades for 2019. The 4Runner, Tundra, and Tacoma will features new equipment and tuning as part of the new design.

Each vehicle will ride on 2.5-inch TRD Pro-exclusive Fox Internal Bypass shocks that have been tuned for specifically for the trucks. These shocks feature multiple bypass zones inside of them, designed to allow for the fine-tuning of damping pressure.

All three TRD Pro models feature the Star Safety System, which includes Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control, Anti-lock Brake System, Electronic Brake-force Distribution, Brake Assist and Smart Stop Technology. Tundra and Tacoma TRD Pro modles also come with Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Alert with Sway Warning System, Automatic High Beams and high-speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control.

2019 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro

The 2019 Tacoma TRD Pro features the Fox front shocks, TRD-tuned springs that give a one-inch front lift, a large sway bar, and rear shocks that have more bypass zones than the front ones. The truck’s TRD skid plate has been updated to include red lettering and the exhaust tip is now Black Chrome. The truck’s 16-inch TRD Pro black allow wheels are offset one inch for a wider track.

Inside, the Tacoma TRD Pro has TRD Pro-branded floor mats and leather-trimmed seats with TRD Pro emblems on the front headrests.

Completing the look is TRD Pro exterior badging, projector-beam headlights with black sport bezels and LED Daytime Running Lights, Rigid Industries LED fog lights, taillights with black sport bezels, and a black TOYOTA grille. The new TRD Desert Air Intake sits above the dust line and aims to keep dust away from the wheel well.

2019 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro

In addition to the new FOX shocks, the 2019 Tundra TRD Pro is equipped with TRD-tuned springs that provide an additional 2 inches of front lift. Wheel travel has been increased more than two inches in the rear. Additionally, the truck comes equipped with Rigid Industries LED fog lights, LED headlights with LED accent lights with a unique black treatment, and a TOYOTA grille with a hood scoop.

Other signature elements of the trim level include new 18-inch BBS forged-aluminum five-spoke satin black wheels; TRD Pro badging on floor mats, the shift knob, and center console; and a Black Chrome exhaust tip.

The Toyota Tundra TRD Pro is assembled at Toyota’s San Antonio, Texas plant.

2019 Toyota 4Rummer TRD Pro

Toyota has added the Fox shocks and TRD-tuned springs to the 4Runner as well, providing one-inch of additional wheel travel. It also comes with a TRD roost shield that gives additional protection to the shocks.

Unlike its TRD Pro stablemates, the 4Run ner gets a new roof rack. It also has a front skid plate with red TRD lettering, 17-inch matte-black TRD alloy wheels that are offset, TRD Pro floor mats, a TRD shift knob, and red-stitched Softex seats with red TRD logos on the front headrests. Additionally, it gets LED fog lights, blacked-out TOYOTA grille, and projector-beam headlights with smoked trim.

The Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro is assembled at Toyota’s plant in Japan.

Each TRD Pro model comes with Toyota’s standard 36-month/36,000-mile basic new-vehicle warranty in additional to longer duration powertrain and corrosion warranties.
