Cooper Tire 'treads wisely,' checks employees' vehicles
TUPELO – Cooper Tire employees were checking the tires of the vehicles of some of the company’s 1,500 employees in Tupelo on Tuesday, and they’ll be at it again today.
It’s part of National Tire Safety Week, and the tire safety checks are being conducted by Cooper Tire employees who are trained volunteers for the company’s Tread Wisely program.
After signing, consent forms, employees vehicles will get a thorough check. All Cooper employees who have their tires checked receive a written report as well as a free tire safety kit and a special discount on a future tire purchase at the Cooper Service store on West Main Street.
Michael Autry, a tire engineer at the plant, was one of the volunteers checking on his co-workers’ vehicles Tuesday morning.
One of the vehicles was a Toyota Tundra driven by Dan Owen.
“I think it’s a great way to make sure your vehicle is safe for you and your family,” Owen said.
The Cooper tires on his Tundra checked out perfectly.
Autry said he had some free time to help with the tire check.
“We’re checking tire pressure and tread depth and doing a visual check to make sure there are no dry rot or weird looking things going on,” he said.
Tread Wisely is a tire and vehicle safety program sponsored by Cooper that is targeted to 15- to 25-year-olds with the goal of sharing information about tire and vehicle safety and urging young drivers to conduct monthly tire safety checks. Cooper Tread Wisely volunteers also provide tire safety demonstrations for youth throughout the community on a year-round basis.
“Tread Wisely volunteers are very active in our local communities and even around the world in places such as Serbia, Mexico and the U.K., where Cooper has locations,” said Cathy Huffman, Community Relations Manager. “In Tupelo, our volunteers have conducted live educational tire safety demonstrations at schools, sporting events and career fairs. We look forward to continuing to provide this important service in the community.”
