New Ram Mid Size Truck Will be Based on Jeep Wrangler Pickup
The forthcoming Jeep Wrangler pickup truck will also spawn a Ram variant, marking the return of the Ram-badged mid-size pickup after the Dakota went out of production in 2011.
According to a new report from Automotive News, both of the pickups will be body-on-frame and will be built alongside each other at Jeep’s Toledo, OH plant. The Jeep pickup is expected to arrive in 2019 as a 2020 model year vehicle, but the Ram version won’t arrive until at least 2020.
FCA first disclosed its plans to produce a new midsize Ram pickup during its product presentation on June 1st. At the time it wasn’t clear if the Ram would share a platform with the Jeep pickup, although it was widely suspected, but AN’s report now indicates this will be the case.
The Wrangler pickup should have a lot in common with the JL Jeep Wrangler, which means the mid-size Ram probably will as well. Both a 3.6-liter V6 and 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder may be offered in the truck, then, along with an eight-speed automatic or six-speed manual transmission or and four-wheel drive. Other goodies such as off-road pages and a terrain management system could be on the table as well, but let’s not get too ahead of ourselves.
Ram will be quite busy between now and 2022 with plans to roll out a new Ram Heavy Duty in that time as well, along with a high-performance Ram Rebel TRX and a new ProMaster City van.
