Ford may be transitioning its Ranger division to an electrified version, possibly developing a hybrid powertrain for the next models.

One can find Ford's mid-size pickup Ranger in almost every part of the world. Varying according to the market, the truck is available in different powertrains and specifications. Owing to stiff competition in the segment Ford is expected to step up the game with its next-generation Ranger, all set for 2022. The truck has been a major player in the segment and competes with the likes of Chevrolet and Jeep among others.
As per a new report in Australia's Car Expert, the next-generation Ford Ranger will undergo a drastic change to keep up with the competition. The mid-size pickup will reportedly feature a new plug-in hybrid powertrain. Along with the Ranger, its SUV version Ford Everest which is available in Australia will also receive the same upgrade. With Ranger being a major player in Ford's lineup, the change will possibly reflect the US version as well. The pickup will arrive sometime next year.
The 2022 Ford Ranger
Under the hood, the next-generation Ranger will boast a 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine supported by an electric motor that will churn out a combined total output of 362 horsepower and 502 lb-ft of torque. The power is channeled via a ten-speed automatic transmission to the wheels. The new plug-in hybrid system will be different from those recently installed in Ford's new Explorer and Escape.

The powertrain is also available in other options. Apart from the hybrid engine, the new Ranger lineup will include two diesel options. A two-liter four-cylinder twin-turbo that will be capable of producing 210 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. A larger three-liter V6 twin-turbo which can churn out 250 horsepower and 443 lb-ft of torque will also be available. The current 3.2-liter five-cylinder diesel will be discontinued. Both the diesel options will be offered in Australia and Europe, but not likely in the United States due to current emission standards.
Going Hybrid In Style
Apart from the restructuring under the hood, the 2022 Ford Ranger will also sport new looks. Inside the door, the new Ranger will get Ford’s SYNC4 infotainment system with a 12.8-inch display on the center console. Additionally, a 10.25-inch screen will also be placed ahead of the driver’s sight. The truck will also get wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay functionality.
Ford is also working on the Ranger Raptor, specifically for Australia. The performance-oriented off-roading truck will feature a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 diesel engine. It will also get the next generation Fox Racing shock absorbers recently introduced in the 2020 Ford F-150 Raptor.
