Production for the Previous Generation of the Silverado and Sierra Will Continue Through 2019

GM has confirmed that it will keep producing Silverado LD and Sierra Limited models through the end of 2019

If you aren’t ready to make the switch over to a new generation of Silverado and Sierra vehicles, GM has you covered

A new generation of Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks has already made its way to GM dealers across the country. However, that hasn’t stopped GM from continuing to sell the previous generation of those two vehicles.

Indeed, GM is now reporting that production of the previous Silverado and Sierra models will continue throughout 2019.

The Latest Additions to the Sierra: 2019 GMC Sierra revealed with industry-first features

GM’s new CFO, Dhivya Suryadevara, confirmed that production of the previous-generation Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra would continue through the end of 2019 during GM’s third-quarter earnings call. While general production for these trucks will begin to phase out during the second half of the year, Suryadevara claims that the future of these models is subject to “market demand.”

The previous-generation Chevy Silverado is currently sold as the Silverado LD. Meanwhile, the previous generation of the GMC Sierra is marketed as the Sierra Limited.

The old versions of the Silverado and Sierra provide the Oshawa plant with something to build

While these two models are beneficial for customers who aren’t quite ready to switch over to the brand-new versions of GM’s full-size trucks, they also provide a benefit to GM’s workers. As GM began to assemble the new iterations of the Silverado and Sierra at its Fort Wayne location, it relocated production of the previous Silverado and Sierra to the assembly plant in Oshawa, Ontario.

With 60,000 models of the Silverado LD and Sierra Limited built so far, the production of these vehicles has kept the Oshawa plant workers busy. That’s fortunate for them, as the only other vehicle currently built at the location are the Chevrolet Impala and the Cadillac XTS.

A Brand-New Form of Luxury: 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali

GM has already confirmed that the XTS will be removed from Cadillac’s lineup as the luxury brand introduces two new sedans. Meanwhile, rumors of the Impala’s cancellation have been circulating for months.

After production of the Silverado LD and Sierra Limited wraps up, it’s unknown what GM will utilize the Oshawa plant for. Still, as long as customers keep purchasing the older iterations of Chevy’s most popular pickup models, production of those models will continue. At least until 2019 draws to a close.
