Toyota gets big lift in Texas-made pickup truck demand
Toyota Motor Corp. (NYSE: TM) is off to a strong start to 2018 when it comes to U.S. truck sales. The automaker saw significant increases in consumer demand for its Tundra and Tacoma pickups, which are manufactured in San Antonio, Texas.
Toyota sold 16,817 Tacoma trucks in February. That’s an 18-percent increase over the same month a year ago.
Tundra sales were also impressive. Toyota dealers rolled nearly 8,000 of the larger trucks off their lots last month, which is a 10.3-percent improvement over February 2017 sales.
The year-to-date figures are even more impressive.
Through the first two months of 2018, U.S. Tacoma sales are up 25.3 percent over the same period in 2017.
Meanwhile, Tundra sales have increased 12.7 percent year-to-date.
It was a good February for Toyota across the board. The automaker, whose U.S. headquarters are based in Plano, sold more than 182,000 vehicles in the country last month. That’s a 4.5-percent leap over 2017 sales.
“We’re off to an outstanding start to the year,” said Jack Hollis, group vice president and general manager for the Toyota division.
Hollis added that the company experienced its “best ever” light truck sales in February.
